What this effect is

An IMAX 70mm frame has roughly ten times the area of standard 35mm, so grain all but vanishes and detail becomes overwhelming. Nolan reaches for it specifically to manufacture a sense of scale, which makes it ideal for landscape and architecture and wasteful on a close-up.
